Hi everyone – Matias here, Destination Expert with SA Expeditions. I just returned from an incredible journey through the Amazon rainforest, starting in the vibrant city of Manaus, Brazil and moving throughout the jungle for an unforgettable adventure.

Journey to the Gateway of the Amazon

I flew directly from Panama to Manaus — an adventure in itself. Even with some flight surprises (a quick diversion to Georgetown, Guyana), our 24-hour emergency team worked seamlessly behind the scenes to make sure everything went smoothly. That support allowed me to focus on what mattered most: exploration.

Manaus is an amazing blend of history and culture, steps away from the jungle. The iconic Teatro Amazonas still stands as a symbol of the city’s rubber-boom past, while markets overflow with exotic fruits, Amazonian fish, and handmade crafts. After a night there, I began my three-hour overland journey northwest toward the untouched wilderness of Anavilhanas National Park. The deeper I went, the thicker the forest grew. The adventure had begun.

Having left the city behind, I was now inside the green expanse of Anavilhanas National Park — one of the largest freshwater archipelagos in the world. 

From the terrace, the Rio Negro shimmered at sunset, and the forest came alive with sound. Later, I cooled off in the infinity pool overlooking the river — a peaceful transition into the slow rhythm of the Amazon.  I was welcomed with deep local knowledge and genuine warmth. The river has its own rhythm — it can rise and fall nearly 30 feet each year, reshaping the entire landscape. 

That first evening, as the sky turned gold and purple, I watched squirrel monkeys leap through the canopy, birds glide between towering trees, and the light fade over the endless green.  Throughout my stay, I experienced three incredible lodges — Mirante do Gavião, Anavilhanas, and Evolução EcoLodge — each special in its own way, each offering a unique window into this extraordinary part of the world.

Life on the River: Immersed in the Amazon

From swimming alongside pink river dolphins to drifting through the jungle at night, each moment revealed a new side of the Amazon’s rhythm. 

By day, we cruised through the forested islands of Anavilhanas, spotting grey and pink dolphins, colorful birds, and perfect reflections on the blackwater. Later, I trekked into the rainforest to discover the secrets of its plants and insects. 

Our local guides shared their deep knowledge of the forest — its sounds, medicines, and balance. They showed how everything here is connected: water, soil, animals, and people.  The Amazon teaches you to slow down, listen, and move with its pulse — ancient, patient, and alive.

Farewell Reflections from the Rio Negro

My last day in Anavilhanas began where it all started — in the water. Floating in the vast Rio Negro, I felt the calm and power of the Amazon all at once. 

We revisited the islands one final time, passing quiet channels where the forest mirrors itself on the blackwater. Later, I stopped at a Casa da Farinha, where local families grind and roast cassava to make farinha — a centuries-old tradition that sustains riverside communities. Nearby, in Novo Airão, I visited a small wood workshop where artisans transform reclaimed forest wood into beautiful, functional art. 

Each encounter reflected the Amazon’s essence — connection, respect, and resourcefulness.

This journey wasn’t just about exploring a place; it was about understanding a way of life. 

Traveling here reaffirmed why we do what we do at SA Expeditions: to honor the spirit of true exploration.  As the rainbow arched over the river that afternoon, I knew I’d be back.
